Appearence
Grail is a sturdy sort of fellow, his musculature heavy with thick and ropey muscles that make him less than graceful, but nevertheless lend him a powerful elegance in his movement. Though his power is evident, he does often exhibit decidedly bird like mannerisms, his head craning and tilting at odd angles, his movements snappy and lightning fast.
His body is cloaked in a rich swath of primary red, red-orange and orangey-yellow highlights giving his coat depth in what could, potentially, be an overpowering hue. A cheerful primary yellow spreads across his shoulders and his wings, the later half and tips of which mellow into a dark, navy-sapphire blue. The transitory between these two extreme colors is a subtle fade in-and-out of green, the color neither subtle or stark against the two hues. His coat, while vibrant, is a bit scruffy and rough, as though it ill kept and untended.
His eyes - a crystalline blue-white - are bright and mirror like, reflecting both what he sees and what he feels without any question to those around him. He sports a ashen white mask that surrounds his eyes and cloaks most of his face in an abbreviated heart shape; black feathers grow in unregimented rows and arcs within the mask, the pattern drawing attention to his eyes. His muzzle and chin are a blue-black color. His feet are an oil-slick black, the skin of his forefeet well weathered and calloused from the years of use.
The entire effect makes Grail look unquestioningly like the crown jewel of the rain forest - a bright eyed ruby macaw.

Personality
Before the great fire that eradicated the original Elpis Latuit, Grail was a brashly gregarious creature, likely to talk up a storm and make friends without the slightest of hesitations. He was, and is, a natural born leader, able to guide and direct without coming across as obnoxious or self important. His tactic is to make friends first, then tell you what to do and how to do it, all without making it seem as though that is precisely what he is doing. He does have a hair-trigger temper, but the storm that ensues is short lived and quickly followed up with an apology, as well as a concentrated effort to refrain from another blow up.
Since the fire, Grail has become more leery and reserved, seeming to test the air as it were before he starts in. He's slower to accept those around him, which can make him seem stand-offish rather than careful.

History
Born in the original Elpis Latuit territory, Grail was the first son born to Lael and Tola Brackendale, and was also among the clan's first born litters. Lael, Grail's father, was among the top council in the clan and as such was able to bring his first born son into the throng of elders and influence. With his naturally gregarious nature, the littlest Brackendale caught the attention of the clan's leader, Melita, who quickly took the child avari under her wing and began grooming him for her position.
With his natural talent in both leadership and friendly discourse, Grail quickly became the leader of the 'puppy parade', orchestrating games and events with his fellow youngsters, even bringing his two junior brothers into the throng when they came onto the scene. By the time Grail was two years old, he had two more siblings and was acting as second man to Melita and accompanied her on official clan business, both sitting in on meetings on sight as well as accompanying the aging female on errands outside of their territory.
One such meeting was the slow undoing of the long standing clan - a tribe of hard-running Pyralis and Hova had set up residence outside of Elpis, infringing on hunting territories and causing general and malicious mischief. As an advocate of peaceful resolution (and enforcing the same on her following), Melita called a meeting with the leaders of the tribe and requested for their cease and desist, or their evacuation of the territory. While there was only a suggestion of hostility in the glaring eyes of the tribe leaders, Grail felt the meeting was a success and that the criminal mischief would stop.
Less than a week later, the home base of the clan came under siege, and was assaulted with fire and a concentrated storm of lightening in the dead of night. In the inferno, many were lost, the closest of which to Grail were his mentor Melita and his mother, Tola. One of his youngest siblings, Zair, also went missing. The general body of the clan was destroyed, burned alive or zapped out of the sky while trying to flee. In the aftermath, looking at the ruination of the clan and the loss of his mate, Lael took his own life, leaving Grail with his assorted siblings. Those who remained after the attack quickly departed, leaving the ruination of what had once been their home.
Some months later, Grail had managed to gather his wits enough to pick up the pieces and reformed what he could of the old clan, though he now has a somewhat unhealthy dose of mistrust for both the fire-tongues and the storm bringers.
